Position Description

Job Summary and Scope:

The IT Disaster Recovery (IT DR) Program Analyst is responsible for architecting, implementing, monitoring and reporting on the progress of the enterprise IT disaster recovery management (IT DRM) program for Veritiv. The objective of this program is to build resilience into and support timely IT operations recovery following the occurrence of an IT outage or major disasters, such as cyberattacks, fires, earthquakes, floods, biochemical attacks and pandemics that result in the partial or complete disruption of business or IT operations.

The primary goals of the IT DRM program are, first and foremost, to prevent impact to or rapid restoration of data center operations and the availability of mission-critical applications and production data in the event of a calamity. In addition, support for key business continuity objectives, including data center damage assessment, emergency communications, coordination with external government agencies and timely work area, is also required.

The IT DR Program Analyst's role is primarily technical, but strong leadership and communications skills are also needed to effectively collaborate with business stakeholders and other technical leaders within IT in the definition, prioritization and support of key IT DR requirements. In addition, an understanding of Veritiv's operations and culture is equally important to technical expertise. The successful candidate will be able to translate business operations recovery requirements into actionable plans, IT systems infrastructure requirements and resilience/recovery testing strategies. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate strategic thinking and will effectively link the enterprise's IT DR activities with business operations recovery and continuity requirements on a proactive basis.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Plan, build, run and manage the design and implementation of Veritiv's enterprise wide IT DRM program, including policies, maturity models, methodologies, sourcing strategies, plans, metrics and scorecards for all components of the program.

  • Coordinate, facilitate and provide detailed direction for all resilience and IT disaster recovery testing activities. The person who fills this position is expected to collaborate with business unit staff, external business partners and key IT staff members for the purpose of planning, directing, controlling and maintaining an effective testing plan.

  • Provide leadership in coordinating, assessing and communicating recovery environment requirements associated with the current data center environment, and participate in new activities, with appropriate technology groups, resulting in recommendations to enable timely, effective decisions regarding data center recovery planning and execution.

  • Provide project management for the IT disaster recovery team for projects specific to the application of technologies, such as storage mirroring, replication, virtual tape libraries, deduplication technology, public Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)-based network services and infrastructure management software automation.

  • Develop and negotiate contracts and service-level agreements (SLAs) for external IT disaster recovery service providers.

  • Assume operations leadership responsibility for IT infrastructure disaster recovery with a major focus on achieving all financial estimates, ensuring the adequacy of end-state production recovery environments, meeting all strategic planning deliverables, and coordinating the activities of technology resources with key business units and development groups, as required.

  • Perform infrastructure recovery capacity planning with key IT technology groups in support of specific business units' current, planned and new initiatives, with a major focus on proactively ensuring an adequate recovery network and processing environment, as well as accurate and predictive budgeting.

  • Compile and follow up on post IT infrastructure disaster recovery testing to ensure actions needed to improve recovery response in the IT organization are implemented.

  • Orchestrate the execution of the IT disaster recovery plan(s) when a business or IT disruption occurs, in coordination with the disaster recovery assurance manager.

  • Create program update communications to internal management (the board of directors, the audit committee, the business continuity management steering committee and business unit management) regarding the status of the IT DRM program.

  • Perform all departmental administrative activities, including staff meeting attendance, monthly status reporting, budgeting, expense processing, documentation and other activities as assigned, in a timely fashion.

  • Due to the nature of IT disaster recovery, the IT disaster recovery analyst must be prepared to be on call at any time, and may also be periodically expected to work off-hours to support test activity.

Qualifications/Knowledge & Experience:

  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of current IT DR planning techniques and technologies, as well as knowledge of the methods used in performing risk analyses and business impact analyses.

  • Working knowledge of data and voice telecommunications to assist in the preparation of related recovery procedures.  The individual should have general knowledge of specific technologies used by the company here, that is, VMware AS400, Windows, Unix, AIX, Solaris.

  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct the planning and execution of IT disaster recovery testing.

  • Ongoing active participation in DRM forums or professional bodies.

  • Business continuity management or IT DRM certifications appropriate to Veritiv's needs: certified business continuity professional, master business continuity professional, fellow of the Business Continuity Institute, master of the Business Continuity Institute are definite pluses

  • Five to seven years' experience successfully designing and testing DR plans.

  • At least two years' experience in DRM within an industry similar to Veritiv.

    • Successful in working on large projects, on time and within budget.
    • Leading or working in high-performance, multidisciplinary workgroups or teams to meet recoverability goals.
    • Creating and defining new operational models and procedures, and explaining complex problems or situations.
