Position Description

Reporting to the Director Fleet and Freight, this role will support the execution of all aspects of the the North American strategy for optimizing fleet equipment and third-party freight costs. The primary goal of this role is to ensure best in class service for our customers by maintaining high quality fleet equipment and managing the performance of third-party freight carriers while continuously reducing transportation costs.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs fact based, data driven analysis, and modeling on significant amounts of freight and fleet data across the supply chain using advanced analytical/statistical and optimization tools.
  • Reporting and analysis of carrier performance, fleet asset, freight audit and payment processes, and the management of carrier compliance through reporting and communication with field operators.
  • Maintains relationships with corporate account representatives from key vendors such as OEM tractor and trailer suppliers, fleet maintenance providers, telematics software providers, equipment leasing companies, less-than truckload (LTL) and truck load (TL) carriers, parcel companies, and freight payment and audit providers.
  • Supports execution for the strategy of transacting all third-party freight in a common Transportation Management System.
  • Creates policies, processes, and scorecards for third-party carrier and mode selection with the goal of properly balancing customer service and cost.
  • Analyzes third-party freight cost reporting and communicates opportunities for profitability improvements to sales, operations, and customer service managers.
  • Regularly communicates to freight carriers where they can be more competitive on price and improve service levels.
  • Highlights opportunities for sourcing lower cost carriers to field operations managers.
  • Coordinates the acquisition, sale, and cross location transfer of fleet equipment.
  • Resolves freight invoice discrepancies to ensure timely payment of freight carriers.
  • Maintains an accurate and comprehensive listing of fleet equipment data which can be used to comply with lease terms and aid in sound equipment replacement and repair decisions that minimize the total cost of asset ownership.
  • Prepares capital expenditure requests related to the procurement of fleet assets and freight management software enhancements.
  • Analyzes product data for opportunities to improve National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) record keeping.
  • Monitors and drives compliance with the fleet rental equipment policy with the goal of reducing costs.
  • Ensures that fleet equipment is being adequately rotated in the field in order to avoid excess mileage fees.
  • Resolves issues or requests from field operators related to fleet assets, carrier performance, selection, billing issues / discrepancies.
  • Ensures that field operators receive a high level of responsiveness and prompt resolution of issues when needed.
  • Participates in executing the inbound freight optimization strategy including identifying and then creating business cases to support projects that will result in improvements to fleet and freight systems such as the Transportation Management System.

Qualifications / Knowledge & Experience: 

  • BA/BS in Logistics, Business, Engineering or related discipline preferred. Master’s degree is a plus.
  • 5-7 years of operations experience in a distribution/manufacturing environment, or, similar experience with extensive experience in managing transportation teams and processes including fleet assets and third-party freight carriers.
  • Experience working in the LTL and TL carrier or brokerage industries is a plus.
  • Experience and expertise in dealing with U.S. Department of Transportation compliance requirements.
  • Experience with freight Transportation Management Systems such as Mercury Gate International is a plus.
  • Experience with fleet routing software such as Roadnet or Appian and Telematics onboard fleet GPS tracking software such as XRS or Peoplenet is a plus.
  • Lean and/or Six Sigma certification or similar continuous improvement certification is a strong plus.
  • CTP, APICS, ISM, or other relevant supply chain certification is a plus.

Requisite Abilities and/or Skills:

  • Knowledge of LTL and Full Truckload pricing strategies.
  • Understand Freight Payment and Auditing processes.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables and formulas).
  • Strong ability to analyze, summarize and articulate key insights from large data sets.
  • Demonstrates detailed knowledge of technical environments, database platforms, related tools, utilities, Transportation Management Systems applications.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Supply Chain processes utilizing all modes of transportation.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Must be highly motivated, flexible, and deadline driven.
  • Team player able to influence others to move toward consensus.
  • Strong situational analysis and decision making abilities.
  • Must have good written, listening and verbal communication skills and be able to communicate with all levels of the organization.
  • Travel will likely be infrequent but willingness to do so when needed is required.
