Position Description
  • Reporting to Director of Transportation Optimization, this role will be responsible for leading and executing the North American strategy for optimizing fleet equipment and third-party freight costs. The primary goal of this role is to ensure best in class service for our customers by maintaining high quality fleet equipment and managing the performance of third-party freight carriers while continuously reducing transportation costs. This position is responsible for leading a team of Fleet and Freight Managers and Specialists.

  • Instills a culture of continuous improvement that results in year-over-year enhancements in transportation processes and cost reductions. This includes ensuring that field operations leaders are educated on transportation management best practices.
  • Directs a team of managers that maintain relationships with corporate account representatives from key vendors such as OEM tractor and trailer suppliers, fleet maintenance providers, telematics software providers, equipment leasing companies, less-than truckload (LTL) and truck load (TL) carriers, parcel companies, and freight payment and audit providers.
  • Leads the strategy development and execution for transacting all third-party freight into a common Transportation Management System.
  • Implements policies, processes, and scorecards for third-party carrier and mode selection with the goal of properly balancing customer service and cost.
  • Leads the implementation of actionable third-party freight cost reporting that identifies reasons for using outside carriers and profitability on the associated sales orders. Efforts may require the design and sanctioning of IT intervention for process changes.
  • Assesses and recommends strategic decisions related to the placement of freight carrier load tendering within the organization (including a centralized load center) and will lead implementation efforts if any changes are required.
  • Oversees the inbound freight optimization strategy and execution which includes increasing the amount of freight load tendering performed in-house and then reducing the shipment cost through strategic transportation mode and carrier selection decisions.
  • Leads a team of managers and specialists in collaboration with Indirect Sourcing to develop and implement processes for regularly communicating to LTL, TL carriers, and couriers where they can be more competitive on price and improve service levels.
  • Ensures that policies and procedures are in place for fleet equipment replacement decisions including lease versus buy, registration and licensing, general use, fuel management, utilization, maintenance scheduling and reporting, and disposal.
  • Ensures that fleet equipment replacement decisions align with changes in the business and the go-forward strategy.
  • Ensures that the team maintains an accurate and comprehensive listing of fleet equipment data which can be used to comply with lease terms and aid in sound equipment replacement and repair decisions that minimize the total cost of asset ownership.
  • Oversees efforts of Fleet and Freight Specialists to resolve issues or requests from field operators related to fleet assets, carrier performance, selection, billing issues / discrepancies. Ensures that field operators receive a high level of responsiveness and prompt resolution of issues when needed.
  • Ensures that fleet equipment procurement decisions consider and properly weigh the costs and benefits of including the latest fuel efficiency and safety technological advancements.
  • Stays connected to changes in regulatory requirements by the DOT and ensures Electronic Driver Logs compliance. Monitors performance and business needs related to telematics/GPS software and equipment including relays and driver phones.

Minimum Education and/or Experience:

  • BA/BS in Logistics, Business, Engineering or related discipline preferred. Master’s degree is a plus.
  • 15 years of operations experience in a distribution/manufacturing environment, or, similar experience with extensive experience in managing transportation teams and processes including fleet assets and third-party freight carriers.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. Department of Transportation compliance requirements and the LTL and TL freight industries.
  • Experience and expertise in dealing with U.S. Department of Transportation related compliance matters.
  • Strong experience and demonstrated proven successes in continuous improvement projects with proven cost savings and bottom line profitability.
  • Experience with Transportation Management Systems is required. Mercury Gate International experience is a plus.
  • Lean and/or Six Sigma certification or similar continuous improvement certification is a strong plus.
  • CTP, APICS, ISM, or other relevant supply chain certification is a plus.

Requisite Abilities and/or Skills:

  • Strong presence with customers, vendors and has excellent presentation skills.
  • A broad, enterprise-wide view of the business and varying degrees of appreciation for strategy, processes and capabilities, enabling technologies, and governance preferred.
  • MS Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Visio).
  • Travel may often be infrequent but willingness to travel up to 50% of the time or more is required.
